Cruise
Day 23
Sunday, August 13, 2023
Today we are at sea and woke up feeling very rested. We slept in until nine and took our time getting ready before having our breakfast in the Neptune Lounge.
We will be in Reykjavik, Iceland for a two day stay in a couple of days and we have two ship excursions scheduled. Unfortunately, there are four other ships scheduled to be in port while we are there and we have drawn the short straw and will have to tender in instead of docking. Because we are arriving late, our first tour is a long one that starts late and doesn’t return until almost 8:00 PM. That’s not a problem except that our tour the next day starts before 7:00 AM which means a very short turnaround time for us. We had debated whether to cancel one of them or just tough it out and do it and this morning we decided to cancel the one on the first day and replace it with a shorter one. We have already seen some of the things that the original tour we had scheduled would be visiting, so this seemed like the best solution.
We sat down with Alexa, the Neptune Lounge Concierge, and she took care of everything for us and rescheduled our tours. We will still have a very early morning the second day, but we will have gotten a good night’s sleep at least.
We spent the rest of the morning relaxing and catching up on things. I wrote up the blog for yesterday and Val took care of some business on her computer. Around one we had lunch in the Lido and then I made the mistake of suggesting we go to casino after lunch and regretted it as neither of us had any luck.
After that I downloaded our photos from yesterday and then spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing and reading. Once again, it is very cold and cloudy outside with heavy fog at times. We have enjoyed our balcony for the scenic viewing, but the weather has made it useless for relaxing. That’s not surprising though as we are traveling through the far north.
Tomorrow is our 41st wedding anniversary so we are going to have our anniversary dinner in the Pinnacle Grill (a ship specialty restaurant) tonight to celebrate a day early. We had originally planned to have it on our anniversary, but there is a special event tomorrow night that we aren’t interested in, so we are doing it a day early.
Our reservation was for 7:30 and after getting ready, we headed off to the Pinnacle Grill. To be honest, we were disappointed
with our dinner, the service was, as always, outstanding and we ran into our
Al, our dining steward from the first half of the cruise, and had a nice chat
with him. I had lobster bisque and Val
had crab cakes both of which were quite good, but things went downhill from
there when we both ordered porcini crusted Alaskan halibut that was
unfortunately overcooked and very mushy, very disappointing. Our desserts were fine with Val having key
lime pie and baked Alaska for me, but the halibut kind of spoiled the
meal. Oh well, we had a great time
anyway and enjoyed celebrating our anniversary.
We of course finished the evening in the casino, and I really got to celebrate tonight. I don’t mean to dwell on our time in the casino, but it has been unlike any other cruise for us. I have been having bad luck lately and have been kept afloat by Val’s generous gift after her big win, but tonight was my night. I was playing the same machine Val got her big win on and was doing pretty well and up $125 when I spun the reels and eight quick hit symbols came up on the screen, a $890 win. Only one tenth of what Val one, but a very big win for me. I played down to $1000 and cashed out and returned to the room a very happy guy.
Tomorrow we are back in Iceland, and we have to get up a little early for
our tour so when we got back to the room, we called it a night and went to bed
a little early.
