Amazon & Carnival Explorer Cruise - Day 49 and 50: At Sea

Sunday, March 24
Day 49

Today is the first of two sea days before we return to Fort Lauderdale and the end of our cruise.  We both slept well last night and were up relatively early for us.  We decided to skip breakfast this morning and sat out on the balcony for a while until our room stewards came to clean our room.

While our room was being cleaned, we went down to the Neptune Lounge and ran into Bob and Carol.  They were the couple that went to the Sombadrome with us in Rio so we chatted with them for a while until our room was cleaned.  We spent the rest of the morning talking about starting to do some packing, but actually just read.

Today we had made reservations at the Pinnacle Grill for a lunch with our evening trivia team.  Val and I were joined by Wally and Nancy, and Roy and Gabriella and had a very nice lunch and great conversation.  After a while, we noticed no one else was in the room and decided it was time to leave.  We had a great time and really enjoyed talking to everyone.

It was already mid-afternoon so Val and I decided to return to our room, but not before making a very quick stop in the casino.  Once back in the room, I went back to reading and Val did a little preliminary packing.  I decided I should do something productive so I updated the blog and uploaded the last of my pictures to the computer.

Tonight was our seventh and last formal night of the cruise which is too many as far as we’re concerned.  The Ocean Bar was very crowded tonight for trivia so seats were hard to come by, but we managed to get the last ones for our group.  We were still feeling full from our lunch in the Pinnacle Grill so we opted to only have a couple of appetizers for dinner before heading to the casino.

After the casino, it was back to the room for a little bit of reading before going to bed.  Tomorrow is a sea day and our last day of the cruise.

Day 50

Today is our final sea day and final day of the cruise.  The last day is the worst day of the cruise and not just because it means our cruise is ending.  It also is the day we have to pack everything up and get it ready to go home.  For some reason, it seems like it’s always harder to fit everything in going home than it is leaving for the cruise.

We got up late and after getting cleaned up, we went to the Neptune Lounge for a snack while they cleaned our room.  After the room was done, we couldn’t put it off any longer and started the packing process.  Val had started her packing yesterday, but I really hadn’t done much.

We were finally pretty much done by 1:00 PM and headed off to the Lido for a late lunch.  When we returned, I did a little more packing and then read for a bit and updated the blog.

Several things make packing more difficult for us.  First off, we ship our large pieces of luggage so we won’t see them again until a week after we get home.  The second thing is, you have to put any luggage you don’t want to lug off the ship yourself out in the hall way before 1:00 AM so you also have to think through what you need for the morning.  We have done it a number of times over the years, but it is still a little stressful.

As the afternoon wore on, we were getting a little bored and decided to go down to the casino.  This was a very good decision for Val and not for me; I quickly lost my money and she won $400.  We spent the rest of the afternoon reading and relaxing until it was time to get ready for dinner.

The last night of the cruise is always a little sad and tonight was no exception.  We went to trivia and said our good byes to our new friends Wally and Nancy and our old friends, Roy and Gabriella.  We had a good time with them every evening at trivia and enjoyed the conversation and good times.

One of the reason we like the fixed dining times is we have the same dining stewards every night and get to know them and they get to know us over the length of our cruise.  It was sad to say good bye to Dolly and Ariy, they provided good service and we enjoyed talking to them every evening.

After dinner we made our last visit to the casino where I lost the last of my money I allocated for gambling and will go home empty handed again.  On the other hand, Val held onto the $400 she won this afternoon and will go home with some money, unlike me.

The evening finally ended and we returned to our room to do a little final packing and then I moved three of our bags out in the hallway where they’ll be picked up tonight and we won’t see them until we are in the terminal tomorrow.  After that, it was straight to bed as we have an early morning tomorrow in Fort Lauderdale.
