Amazon & Carnival Explorer Cruise - Day 11: Scarborough, Trinidad and Tobago

Thursday, February 14

Happy Valentine’s Day!  Today we are docked in Scarborough, Tobago, the second and smaller island of the country of Trinidad and Tobago.  Trinidad is the most heavily populated and much more bustling while Tobago is more laid back and tourist oriented.

It was a short walk from the ship into town.
It was another early morning (at least for us) as we had another tour leaving early.  Today our tour was another ship excursion and is called the Tobago Island Explorer which took us to various points of interest around the island.  It was a long tour lasting seven hours, but it was mostly on the bus which gave Val’s knee a break today.  We were out of our room and off the ship by 8:30 and soon found our tour and were on our way before 9:00.  Our first stop was Fort St. George, which sat high on a hill overlooking Scarborough.  We spent a while there enjoying the views and going through the museum to our next stop.

Our next stop was the Pembroke Heritage Center where we were given a guided tour of the grounds.  It was mildly interesting, but we weren’t exactly sure whose heritage we were seeing.  From the Heritage Center we drove on to a viewpoint overlooking a beautiful harbor where we would be having lunch.  The overlook was somewhat spoiled for photography by the numerous wires running across the view.

Our bus drive was very personable and outgoing.  She was a performer and entertained us with traditional songs of the island.
The view from a scenic overlook.  The town on the left is where we were going for lunch.
Next, we stopped at Jemma’s Sea View Kitchen in the town of Speyside for lunch, where ate overlooking the harbor with cool ocean breezes blowing in through the open widows. The view was pretty spectacular, and just as great as the food.  We had an excellent salad to start followed by a main course of Mahi Mahi.  The sides were fried okra, rice, a potato dish, and some mixed vegetables.  It was a very good lunch and we really enjoyed it.  You never know what you will be served when you are on an excursion, but this one was one of the best.

A beautiful spot to have lunch.

Val was intrigued when she saw this sign.
Then she saw the glass bottom boat and understood.
After lunch we wandered around the beach for a bit and then it was off on a long drive to our final stop, the town of Charlottesville.  Charlottesville is a small fishing town on the northeast end of Tobago so we had traveled almost half way around the island.  We wandered around the picturesque harbor for a while taking many pictures and then boarded the bus for the long drive back to the ship.

We made it back to the ship before 4:00 and made our way back the room.  We had a good time today, with some stops more interesting than others, and we did get to see a great deal of the island.  It is a beautiful island with none of the big city atmosphere of Trinidad, we really liked our stay in Tobago.

We relaxed a bit and then I started to write the blog for today and downloaded the pictures we took.  We also had to turn in our passports and Brazil visas in anticipation of Brazilian customs officials boarding the ship in the next few days to make sure everyone had the necessary papers to enter Brazil.  We will get them back when we finish our last Brazilian port.  I also took some time to go out on deck and get some pictures of Scarborough as we sailed away.

We didn’t have too much time to relax before getting ready for dinner.  I quickly download our pictures and backed them up and finished the blog for today and then it was off to trivia, dinner and the casino.  There was a special Valentine’s Day dinner tonight and the food continues to be really good on this cruise.  After dinner it was off to the casino for another forgettable night for both of us.  Tomorrow our port will be Kingstown on the island of St. Vincent.
