Day 25, Corfu,
Greece
Today is
our first day in Greece and our scheduled port was Corfu. I say "was" because things didn’t work out as
planned.
We had a
private photo tour schedule today, which was to start at 8:30 so we were up at
7:30. When I got up I was surprised we weren’t
close to the dock yet as we were scheduled to dock at 8:00. We saw the town and the docking procedure
started just after 8:00, but it soon became apparent that there was a
problem. Despite both of the ship’s side
thrusters going full blast and a tug boat pushing us, we weren’t making
progress to the dock. Finally, just
after 8:30 the captain made an announcement that due to very high winds, we
wouldn’t be docking in Corfu today and instead it would end up being a sea day.
Corfu, Greece, we were never able to dock due to high winds. |
We head back out for an unexpected sea day. |
The wind
was blowing directly off the dock into the ship and because of its high
profile, the ship was actually being pushed away from the dock even with the
help of the tugboat. He also said the forecast was for even higher sporadic winds throughout the day, which would have been
very dangerous if we had docked as it could actually break the lines and push the ship off the
dock. It was a big disappointment, but
certainly understandable as safety is the most important thing. Although we were disappointed, the poor
weather might have made for a bad day ashore. We had not paid in advance for the tour so we didn’t lose
any money, just the experience of seeing the area.
We
decided to go to the Neptune Lounge and continue looking at our pictures while
our room was being cleaned, but while we were there they announced an update
for our unscheduled sea day.
There was a lecture scheduled for 10:00 by Jim McFarland on a rafting
trip he did through the Grand Canyon and since we had done that ourselves, we
wanted to see what his experience was.
After
the lecture, it was back to our room and we spent the time before lunch
reviewing more of our photos. After
lunch in the Lido, Val was off to trivia and I got the blog up to date and did
some organizing of our photos.
Val
returned from trivia and reported that her team had won today with a perfect
score. Unfortunately, she also returned
with some bad news; she has a sore throat and isn’t feeling very well. We thought that enough time had passed since
I got my cold that she was going to avoid getting it, but I guess not and now I
feel bad that I have passed it on.
Val's afternoon trivia team celebrates a win and perfect score with champagne. |
The ship
continues to be under heavy norovirus deterrent protocol with the crew doing
extra cleaning duties and everyone continuing to be warned to wash their
hands. According to the captain the
number of cases is decreasing, but the danger is still at hand if precautions
aren’t taken. All thing considered, Val
and I decided we would rather have colds than the norovirus. These are the most severe precautions that we
have seen on any of our cruises.
We are
back to our normal dinner routine tonight with trivia, followed by dinner and
the casino. This is our first trip to
the dining room since our dining steward Toto left the ship to go home in
Dubrovnik. He had worked seven straight
months without a day off under his contract and now will spend two to
four months at home before being offered a new contract.
Tomorrow
we have an early excursion and hopefully Val will feel well enough to go on
it. We did go to bed early again to try
and get as much rests as possible.
