Grand Africa Cruise - Sea Days

Cruise Day 53

Thursday, December 1, 2022

"You will never be completely at home again, because part of your heart will always be elsewhere.  That’s the price you pay for the richness of loving and knowing people in more than one place.”  -- Miriam Adeney

Today is the start of three relaxing sea days in row, but instead of sleeping in, Val and I were both up around eight.  After getting dressed and breakfast in the Neptune Lounge, Val went out on the balcony to read and I did some organizing of our photos and more culling of the bad ones.  I am doing as much as possible when I have free time on board so I don’t have to do it once we get home.

After a while I joined Val on the balcony and read until lunch time.  Our next port is Ghana and they are requiring a temperature check of everyone before we dock so after lunch we went down to the theater and had that done.  It seems a little odd as we won’t be there for three days, but it’s what they want so we will do it.

When our temperature check was done, we headed back to our room, grabbed the computer and went to the Neptune Lounge to view more of our photos.  We have already looked at our safari pictures, but because of the last few days being so port intensive, we haven’t looked at our Tanzania, Zanzibar or Madagascar pictures and also haven’t reviewed anything after the safari, so we have quite a few to look at.

We finished Tanzania and Zanzibar and then returned to our room to relax until dinner.  There were some interesting cloud formations as the sun went down and we spent the early evening on the balcony, but the sun went down behind the clouds and there was a minimal sunset.

After that we got ready for dinner and did our usual evening routine, we returned to the room and read until bedtime.  Tomorrow is a sea day so it will be another relaxing day.

"I have wandered all my life, and I have travelled; the difference between the two being this, that we wander for distraction, but we travel for fulfillment.”                 -- Hilaire Belloc

Today is the second of three sea days and we are enjoying the down time.  Our intent this morning was after eating breakfast, is to go to the theater and attend a lecture on the “Food and Agriculture of the West African Coast” by Olga Stavrakis who is a new lecturer who joined the ship in Cape Town.  Also, Jeremey, the Cruise and Port Director, is out of quarantine and will continue his port talks today for our next two ports of Ghana and Ivory Coast.

We were up around eight, but our plans went a bit awry this morning as after we finished breakfast Val said she thought she should make an appointment with the ship’s doctor as she has had some tooth pain for a while, and it is slowly getting worse.  There is no dentist on board, but before the tooth becomes a full blown tooth ache she is hoping to get a prescription for antibiotics that will get her through until we get home when she can see her own dentist.

It is best to take care of these things on sea days, so she is taking advantage of it today and got an appointment for 10:00 AM.  That is right when the lecture is scheduled, but it’s better to take care of it now rather than wait.  The doctor did give her some antibiotics so she should be good to go until we get home.

Since we had missed both talks this morning, we spent the rest of the morning on our computers answering e-mails and taking care of some banking (credit card payments).

Val and I were talking last night, and we both agreed that we almost feel a little guilty that we are just spending our time relaxing on these sea days.  The fact is though, we will be back in the thick of port activity in another two days so we should take advantage of these sea days and get some rest.  It’s not like we don’t enjoy relaxing and what better place to do it than out on our balcony watching the beautiful blue sea roll by.

After lunch, we headed off to the Neptune Lounge to look at more of our photos.  It took a while, but we are nearly caught up, the only photos we haven’t looked at yet are Cape Town, Walvis Bay and Luanda.  We should get caught up tomorrow before our next series of ports and more pictures.

We spent the rest of the afternoon reading and relaxing and then had our usual evening of dinner and the casino.  The clocks are going to be set back again tonight so we will be on Greenwich Mean Time (or more commonly now, UTC).  The extra hour won't mean too much as tomorrow is our third and final sea day before our next port so it wasn't like we will need an extra hour of sleep.
