Alaska Summer Solstice Cruise - Nome, Alaska

Cruise Day 13

Friday, June 21, 2024

Well, here we are in Nome, and stuck on the ship, what a disappointment, we had big plans for the day.  The medical staff told me they would call this morning around nine to get my temperature reading, but instead they called around eight and I was still in bed.  We scrambled around and I finally got my temperature taken and it was 99.4 and according to them, too high, so I was stuck with another day of quarantine.

Here is the big picture, Nome is the red marker in the upper left.

Nome is located on the Seward Peninsula and is the red marker at the bottom.  Val had rented a car and we intended to make the 70 mile drive to the Inuit village of Teller (the yellow marker at the upper left) and back, but of course I spoiled that by getting COVID.

We used room service for our breakfast today and that arrived around nine.  I took my temperature again and it was back to normal, I wish they would have called a nine like they said they would.

This was getting near sunset just after midnight, but the sun wasn't due to set until 1:18 AM and the sun would rise 4:38 AM, a very short night.

Another picture around 3:30 AM.  This is as dark as it gets and the sun isn't due to rise for another hour.

Not much to say about today, I have periodically been taking my temperature and it has stayed at the 98.6 point so hopefully that will be enough to grant me my freedom tomorrow.  I have to say, the ship has bent over backwards to make sure we had our meals and anything we needed.  They are even giving us future cruise credit for the time I have spent in quarantine.

I have mostly been laying around and reading, but I did get motivated enough to catch up on the blog, but otherwise it has been pretty boring.  We are hoping for better times tomorrow.

We arrive in Nome.  The tenders will be ferrying people from the ship to the area inside the breakwater.

Several pictures of Nome, there's not much to it.

A tender on its way in.

I got another call from the ship’s medical team around three and they asked me about my temperature.  I told them I have been taking it all day and it had been staying at 98.6 and the nurse surprised by saying I was released from quarantine, but that I needed to wear a mask for the next five days.  I didn’t expect that and happily thanked them for their help.

That doesn’t mean I’m miraculously cured, but it does mean I can get out and about on the ship as long as I wear a mask.  This will make life easier for Val as she has been having to go to the Lido or Neptune Lounge and bring back food for me.  We could have just room service like we did this morning, but it is not as convenient, and the selection is limited.

Tonight, we went back to the dining room for dinner and had another good meal.  We also went to the casino where I did better than usual and actually didn’t lose all my money so that was a pleasant change.  I didn’t stay too long as I’m still not feeling back to normal, and my energy level is low.  Luckily, the next three days are sea days so I will have time to get better without missing any ports.
